Budapest – Traveling has been a distinct factor in the growth as well as the continuous development of various ethnic groups all over the world. In Southeastern Europe, the Hungarians, also known as the Magyars, wandered more than a thousand miles to arrive at their present homeland. Their origin, however, has sparked numerous discussions and inspired the creation of various theories.

Origin

Many experts provide different theories on the Magyars’ original homeland. Although the majority of evidence from various events points to Asia, whether the Magyars came from the East is still subject to dispute. The group seemed to be a part of the Turkic hordes, with the horse being revered as the most important animal. The Magyars traveled and fought on horseback. In their long migrations, the group settled in what is now known as Hungary.

The belief that they are Asian also came from the study of their weapons and fighting styles. Both of these were similar to those of the Avars, Huns, and other mounted nomadic peoples. Nevertheless, the Magyars were known to be a separate community from the abovementioned, as well as from the Turks.

Those who wish to learn more about the concepts and findings on the ethnic peoples’ origin can look into the Finno-Ugrian Theory, Orientalist Theory, The Magyar-Uygur Theory, The Hun-Avar Theory, and the Black and White Magyars.

The Nation and National Identity

Aside from these remarkable origin theories for the Magyars, there are colorful myths about the first people conquering and occupying the Carpathian Basin. This event led many to consider their nation as the final fortress of Western Christianity and civilized Europe. Hungary was a unit in the Middle Ages, with Latin chronicles that date back to the 10th century. There were lively stories, but there weren’t specific ethnically identified peoples during this period.

Only after the Middle Ages did a demonstrable dual national consciousness emerge. One that both ethnic Hungarians and non-Hungarians could share was a narrower label from their linguistic, cultural, and ethnic community.

Modern-Day Society

In spite of the diverse theories on their origin, it is clear that the Magyars’ present home is Hungary. They remain the main inhabitants of the land. Additionally, they have also become a minority group in countries such as Romania, Serbia, Austria, Slovakia, Ukraine, Croatia, Slovenia, and the Czech Republic. Thus, it is no surprise that their culture and traditions have also traveled far and wide.

The country may have a varied culture throughout the nation, but the distinctive Magyar practices remain intact. The people have a rich and colorful tradition in folk craft, such as pottery, embroidery, and carvings. Moreover, their musical contribution is a beautiful representation of their distinct cultural customs and influences. In addition to these, Magyar poets and writers have produced great literature. Sadly, many of these poets and writers are not known internationally.

Nowadays, there have been a lot of interesting developments with their growth as a nation. Their works could reach a bigger audience and spread ethnic awareness to the international community. Even with these global changes, the younger generations continue to uphold certain familial traditions and other special celebrations.
